4 Tips to Improve Your Cat’s Picky Eating Habits

Is your cat turning up their nose at dinner again? Don’t worry—you’re not alone! Many cats are little gourmets, and even the smallest change in their meal can send them walking away.

How can we help our cats overcome picky eating? Let’s try the following steps.

TIP 1: Build Good Eating Habits

Feed at the Same Time
Give food at fixed times every day. Measure the right amount. This helps your cat eat regularly and not snack all day. Treats should be less than 10% of daily calories. A 5 kg cat can have about 10 g of treats a day.

Change Food Slowly
When giving new food, mix it with the old food for at least one week. Changing too fast can upset your cat’s stomach. Slow changes are safer.

TIP 2: Increase Activity

Play with your cat every day.
Spend time together before meals.
This builds your bond and helps your cat move more.
More activity burns calories and boosts appetite.

TIP 3: Improve Food Type and Temperature

Change the Type of Food
Some cats stop eating simply because they are bored with the same food.
Try different canned foods with new ingredients.
You might find one they really like.

Add Smell or Flavor
Mix in a small amount of food your cat loves, like fish flakes or meat purée.
You can also warm the food slightly (not hot).
Warming brings out the smell and makes the food more inviting.

TIP 4: Use the Right Food Bowl

Keep your cat’s bowl clean.
Choose stainless steel, ceramic, or glass bowls.
Plastic bowls can get scratches that trap bacteria.
Using plastic every day can also cause black chin acne in cats.
