Why is my cat scratching the stair carpet?

Why is my cat scratching the stair carpet?

It’s normal.

Cats scratch to keep claws healthy, stretch, and mark their territory. A carpeted staircase feels like a tall, sturdy scratching post, so it’s very tempting.

How to protect your stairs carpet?

  • Give a better option (match their style)

Scratches& horizontally → put a flat cardboard mat near the stairs.

Scratches vertically → add a tall, sturdy post (as tall as your cat when fully stretched), ideally sisal rope/fabric.

  • Put it in the right spot
Place the scratcher where they already scratch (e.g., bottom step or landing). Make sure it’s stable and doesn’t wobble.

  • Protect the carpet while training
Cover the scratch zone with plastic runners/sheeting or a temporary protector until the habit shifts.

  • Make the new spot rewarding
Rub with catnip/silvervine (if they like it), then praise or treat when they use it.

  • Trim claws regularly
Shorter claws = less damage. (Optional: soft nail caps if needed.)

  • Don’t punish
No yelling or spray bottles. Gently redirect to the scratcher instead.

If your cat “bunny kicks” the stairs

Some cats lie on their side and kick with back legs (a hunting move). Offer a kicker toy so they can grab and kick that instead of the carpet.
